Planning Your Plunge

What separates a real plunge from a cold bath

Built to stay cold

Insulation and chilling are what make a true plunge. We focus on equipment that holds a low temperature reliably, season after season.

Clean water, less work

Filtration and a good cover keep the water clear and cut the upkeep — so the daily habit actually sticks.

Buyer's Guide

Cold plunge, explained before you buy

Thinking about a cold plunge? Here's how the pieces fit together, how people actually use them, and what changes when you're plunging through a Canadian winter.

Cold plunge tub vs. chiller — what's the difference?

They're two different things that work together. The cold plunge tub is the insulated vessel you sit in; on its own you cool it with ice (a classic ice bath) or cold tap water. A chiller is a separate unit that actively cools, circulates and usually filters and sanitizes the water, so the tub holds a precise temperature day after day with no ice runs. A DIY ice bath is the cheapest way to start; a tub-plus-chiller setup is what turns cold plunging into an effortless daily habit.

How cold, and for how long?

Most people start somewhere around 10–15°C and work colder over time, and a few minutes is plenty — especially at first. There's no need to suffer; consistency matters far more than chasing extremes. A reliable thermometer and a timer take the guesswork out, and a good insulated cover holds the temperature between sessions. Cold immersion isn't for everyone — if you're pregnant or have a heart condition, check with your doctor first.

Cold therapy and contrast therapy

Cold-water immersion — often called cold therapy — is widely used for post-workout recovery and a clear-headed start to the day. Pair it with heat and you get contrast therapy: alternating between a sauna and a cold plunge until the rhythm becomes a ritual in itself. It's exactly why so many people end up wanting both.

Sizing, placement and water care

Most home plunges are single-person and surprisingly compact — they fit a garage, basement, patio or balcony. Decide indoor vs. outdoor early: outdoors gives you the bracing open-air plunge but needs weather protection, while indoors needs a drain plan and splash-friendly flooring. Either way, plan for filtration and simple water care so the water stays clean between changes — a chiller with built-in filtration does most of that for you.

Cold plunging through a Canadian winter

Canadian winters are both the appeal and the challenge. Outdoors, standing water can freeze solid, so look for a chiller that also heats (many do) to hold a safe temperature, freeze-protected plumbing, and a well-insulated tub and cover; indoors sidesteps the freeze entirely. Tell us where yours will live and we'll help you plan a setup that runs all twelve months.
